details about the gunman and his girlfriend. what happened in the days before and the weeks before sunday's deadly shooting. police say he may have had help. and may have been planning to escape as well. >> today is the day that so-called dreamers face a deadline to renew their status. this morning tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants are racing to do just that before the government begins phasing out the program. >> live look outside on this thursday morning, little friday out there. it's october 5th. we'll have weather and traffic coming up on the 5s at 6:05. >> ♪ >> first up, though new developments at 6:00 as police continue to pour over the las vegas gunman's actions leading up to sunday's shooting hoping to find some kind of clue that would explain what set him off. >> officials say stephen paddock rented another room in vegas during another music festival the week before in september featuring lord and chance the rapper. they're not sure why yet but it is being factored into their investigation. this as their finding out that paddock specifically requested an

at the mandalay bay hotel where he was able to bring in nearly two dozen firearms, plus thousands of rounds of ammunition. meanwhile the fbi interviewed the gunman's girlfriend for hours. marilou danley has denied any involvement in the planning of the massacre. her attorney read a statement from his client saying that paddock unexpectedly brought her a plane ticket about two weeks ago to visit family in asia. >> "while there, he wired me money, which he said was for me to buy a house for me and my family. i was worried that was a way of breaking up with me. it never occurred to me in any way whatsoever that that he was planning violence ." >> investigators think there may be a possible accomplice out there and have reason to believe that paddock planned to escape. we've also learned this morning about 300 of the injured have been released from hospitals in las vegas. president donald trump visited yesterday and he met with law enforcement as well as

survivors one of whom called the president's visit comforting. in the days after the las vegas shooting congress is picking up support for a ban on the sale of bump stop equipment much of the dozens of guns found in the gunman's hotel room and home 12 had attachments that create rapid fire allowing a semi automatic to perform more like an automatic weapon. senator dianne feinstein introduced a bill to make bump stops illegal. some republicans said they would be open to considering such legislation. >> we are following breaking news from africa where three army green berets were killed in an ambush near the niger mali border as those special forces soldiers were on patrol with nigerian troops. they came under hostile fire. two other green berets were hurt in that attack. they are said to be in stable condition. there is suspicion that al-qaeda is behind this deadly ambush. the president was briefed on the situation while on board air force one last

>> ♪ >> developing overnight here locally d.c. fire and ems responded to a car crash around midnight in northeast. it happened on south dakota avenue and bladensburg road. first responders had to cut out one person from a car. two people were taken to the hospital. no word yet on what caused this crash. >> an alexandria man due in court facing charges he threatened to kill african-americans at howard university almost two years ago. federal prosecutors say in november 2015 john edgar rust posted an anonymous online statement using wifi at a panera restaurant in alexandria. court documents show rust roommate informed users on reddit that rust had posted the threat. in fairfax county a jury acquitted man in the death of a wedding caterer. kempton bonds was accused of murdering tyonne johns last augusta park in chantilly. bonds was a park worker and was trying to clean up after a wedding. prosecutors say that bonds stabbed johns after an

a verdict was the result of a retrial. a judge declared a mistrial in the first trial after jurors failed to reach a verdict on that murder charge. >> ♪ >> happening today, 10s of thousands of young undocumented immigrants are racing to extend their protected status under dac today hours before the government begins phasing it out. >> melanie alnwick live on capitol hill with what's going on. good morning, mel. >> reporter: good morning, guys. so, protection from deportation and legal work permits that's what daca has provided since 2012. now is this orderly wind down, this six-month period begins president trump is now putting the fate of these dreamers in the hands of congress. democrats on capitol hill did hold a rally this week, showing strong support for the so-called dreamers who serve in the military, attend college and hold professional jobs. president trump announced last month that the deferred action for childhood arrivals program, or

march fifth. those with current two-year work permits set to expire by then, about 154,000 people can renew for two more years as long as those applications are in today. some organizations have stepped in to help filers with the $495 fee and fedexing those applications into immigration offices. there is a lot on the line for these young immigrants. >> being a single mom with a four-year-old that has autism is really hard. knowing that it could be the end of this for me. it's leaving my autistic child behind its really hard. so, i just -- i don't know, it's really hard. seeing -- watching the news, all my dreams coming downhill. >> reporter: now, president obama began the executive order in 2012 to protect children brought illegally into the country by their parents. now, two republican senators have introduced a bill. it's called t

it could provide a path to citizenship and become a replacement for the daca program. we know that president trump has said he supports a legislative solution to this, but if a solution cannot be reached by march fifth, that is when some of these work permits will begin to expire at the rate of about 30,000 a month. live on capitol hill, i'm melanie alnwick fox5 local news. >> also today here in d.c. a massive cleanup effort of the anacostia river. >> all week long members of the fox5 team have been participating in 21st century first ever impact week. this morning our tucker barnes joins us now from the banks of the anacostia with what is next on the service project list. good morning. >> allison, good morning. well, of course you were out there helping those sweet kittens and puppies yesterday and i guess the day before steve was packing some boxes for veterans. well, it's my turn. i'm going to be out on the anacostia today for impact week and we're going

members from fox5 and additional members of national geographic out together. it's a little dark. you have to bear with me here but just on the other side of the trees the anacostia and we're going to get out on some boats later this morning and do some cleanup out there and we'll be participating for much of the day. so very excited about being able to give back here for impact week. i'm also here to do weather. let me first tell you that harvest moon if you can take a look at the moon right now it is absolutely gorgeous out here. it's setting to the west but what a big beautiful moon. makes me feel like something strange is going to happen. 60 now in washington. you know, i'm wearing a jacket. you can probably wear one its a little cool out here. 52 in gaithersburg, 47, that's cool enough for a jacket in manassas, 57 in quantico, 59 in leonardtown this morning. we're going to warm it up today. warm over the next couple days getting progressively more humid. let's take a look at that satellite picture. generally sunshine for us expected today. we are going to have a few clouds this afternoon as we've got this frontal system off to our north and west which will never really make it

region. high pressure is going to continue to kind of control our weather but the trend around here will be warmer temperatures. again low 80's this afternoon, low to mid 80's and progressively more humid -- more humidity as we get into the weekend. there you go 84. we'll take a look at the weekend forecast, we'll talk about nats baseball and the frequency with which metros go by where i'm standing. there's that moon. gorgeous harvest moon setting right now. get out and take a look at it if you get a chance. actually beautiful out there. good job, mike. erin i'm going to toss inside to you. >> right now 6:08. you have a beautiful moon. i have big problems on the road. 95 northbound a crash blocking two lanes just moved over to the zebra stripe area. this is at franconia-springfield parkway but look at that drive time from dale city to the beltway it will take you 87 minutes. that's an hour 27 minute trip. leave early. consider hopping off and taking route one but that's dealing with bailout traffic on the northbound side as well. south of that point we have heavier volume in stafford. right now virginia driver 95 northbou

occoquan this morning. saw the red there. look at this tractor-trailer crash in annapolis. this is 50 eastbound by richie highway blocking the right shoulder right lane. they got to get that cleared. keep it to the left lanes to get through there on the eastbound side. bw parkway a crash southbound between the beltway and 410. it was blocking the right& lane, right shoulder involving an overturned car. now, that's cleared to the right shoulder so all lanes reopened but look at that long line of red. from 198 to the beltway it will take you 36 minutes. i suggest keeping to it 95 southbound. you still may want to take 50 inbound even though volume is increasing 202 to 29550 inbound is more pleasant than bw parkway southbound right now. typical delays on 270 southbound. a crash in germantown crop erode eastbound at wearing station road. that one also involving an overturned vehicle so caution there. here's a live look at 270 out by 109. look a all those brake lights. 70 to 121, 35 minute ride. 355 bailout traffic building as

water main break in arlington. lee highway veitch street caution. still active repair. all metro rail lines are on time. at least we can end on a happy note. back to you allison and steve. >> erin thanks. nine past the hour. we continue to follow a story you saw first on fox5. a state audit under way in prince george's county schools after allegations of grade fixing and fraud to boost the graduation rate. >> a hotline and e-mail has been established for whistle blowers but the school district still hasn't sent that information out to staff yet. fox5's annie yu is live in upper marlboro with the latest in this ongoing story. annie, good morning. >> reporter: well, allison and steve, that statement audit began more than a month ago and we are told it should be wrapping up in just a few weeks. but about two weeks ago, they created this e-mail and hotline for whistle blowers and many are wondering why this information hasn't been sent out to employees so that they can get in touch with investigators. among those wondering why is one of the board members who called for this state audit. take a

>> okay, looks like we're having some difficulty with that sound bite, but that sound bite is from ed burroughs, one of the board members, he basically says till this day he's running into teachers who say that they don't have the hotline number, that it hasn't been made public and it's not available to them. he also mentioned that dr. maxwell was defending himself when this was all happening, he was denying the allegations and he had sent out several e-mails to the county wide list serve however in this situation he hasn't sent out any information connecting employees to this new hotline and thinks this is a very reasonable request. now, in response, school spokesman john white says in part "the state's investigation has been well publicized in our county and we have followed all of the firm's directions and process and, therefore, the school district says that they really

forecast. i got a jacket on. not sure you're going to need it later this afternoon but it's probably the right thing for this morning. temperatures overnight have fallen back generally into the 50's. we're 60 in the city. after school today we're in the low to mid 80's so should be a very warm afternoon and over the next couple days we're going to get progressively more humid as well. 53 up in gaithersburg. there are some 40's, culpeper, hey good morning 45 degrees for you. 50 in fredericksburg. 59 this morning in leonardtown. look at the satellite and radar weak front off to the north and west. it's going to try mightily to get in here but it's not going to succeed. high pressure will keep it off to our north and west. we'll keep things dry around here. we'll have a few clouds this afternoon and plenty warm for this time of year, high temperatures in the low 80's. here's a quick look at that forecast. again we're talking about temperatures in the low 80's a little later this afternoon. all right. looking down in the tropics, we are looking at td number 16 and that may impact our

does that give you a little bit of an enjoyment to see him kind of truck stopping people out there. there. >> it's funny to hear a female talking about routes like. it's funny. >> well, that reporter jourdan rodrique responded to newton's comment in a statement to the nfl saying in part i was dismayed by his response which not only belittled me but countless other women before me and beside me who work in similar jobs. backlash didn't stop there. the association for women in sports media said the remarks are disrespectful and an nfl statement called them just plain wrong. according to a panthers spokesperson newton later had a conversation with the reporter and expressed regret. however rodrique tweeted i spoke with him after and it was worse. i chose not to share because i have an actual job to do today and one he will not keep me from. new england patriots flying in style. the team's new boeing 737 made its inaugural flight to florida for tonight's game. it is painted with the team's logo

morning from the 14th street bridge. things improving slightly 95 northbound heading towards the mixing bowl. about an hour commute from dale city to the beltway. earlier crash at franconia-springfield parkway moved to the shoulder. this camera closer to fairfax county parkway and we're just seeing miles of backed up traffic in the main lanes. hov lanes look pretty good so that's something to keep in mind heading up from dale city this morning. annapolis 50 eastbound at richie highway a tractor-trailer crash. they're trying to clear it. one lane was getting by but now they've opened up two lanes get, by so in better shape there. as we move things over for a look in arlington we have a water main break. they're repairing it on lee highway. metro is on time. keep it to fox5. we're going to be right back. >> ♪ >>

the next storm is up. this looks to become nate. it's td number 16 but watch the track here over the next couple of days. it looks like it becomes a hurricane, at least that's the official forecast as it tracks up into the northern gulf and perhaps gets close to new orleans or the western panhandle of florida there by next week. the weekend early- some of this moisture will likely make it up into the midatlantic by next monday and tuesday. there you can see that eventually that moisture gets up here. we'll get needed rain early next week associated with what happens with what looks to become nate later today or perhaps tonight. seven-day forecast, more sunshine, more heat as well, temperatures in the 80's. looks great for baseball both tomorrow and saturday and then we'll look for some rain showers perhaps associated with nate by the end of the weekend. all right, again, down here on the anacostia beautiful this morning. sorry we're not doing memes. i know you're upset about that erin but i promise we'll get back to them soon. i got some work i got to do on an coul

>> you work hard but i know i always look for the morning meme 'cause i'm always dealing with bad traffic. >> you got it. >> this will impact a lot of commuters. an hour from the beltway to the 14th street bridge. a crash involving a motorcycle involving all but the right lane. one right lane gets by right now. i would avoid the 14th street bridge if possible because 395 is literally a parking lot in the main lanes leading up to that location because again just the one right lane gets by. you know what that looks like when all lanes are opened. a lot of big problems out there. we have skyfox over 270 southbound as well. we're seeing a lot of backups there. about a 30 minute slowdown from 121 to the beltway. aside from that one, big delays 95 northbound holding strong this morning. we had an earlier crash by franconia-springfield parkway. that's since moved to the shoulder. but by fairfax county parkway all the main lanes still pretty jammed up. it's going to take you 56 minutes to get from dale city to the beltway. south that of point you're jamming from fredericksburg into stafford. just a lot of heavy traffic. hov lanes are okay it's
